In the fullness of time, Couples for Christ came into existence as a divine idea from God. He inspired different individuals to bring it to fruition, and none of them originally conceived the idea of creating a community as large as Couples for Christ. Rather, each of them, in their own way, sought to fulfill their purpose, guided by God’s inspiration. The credit for its creation belongs solely to God—the all-knowing, merciful, and steadfastly faithful God who deserves all praise.
The emergence of this new and unique gift of God’s presence, the realization of His Church, and the sacrament of His communion were entrusted to one couple, perhaps an unlikely pair, among the many gathered: Francisco and Geraldine Padilla. As the saying goes, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” This, however, is not about Couples for Christ but about God—the God who calls!
Frank and Gerry responded to the call to worship, live for, serve, and even die for God. Worship becomes a communion of God’s love, which in turn, inspires one to emulate Jesus, the Sacrament of the Father. In worship, one is drawn to share God’s love with their spouse, family, and all of God’s people, bringing everyone into communion with God. This worship also instills a call to mission, to share the good news of love with all people of goodwill, inviting them to seek communion with God, not just mere community.
Frank and Gerry heeded the call and worshiped God wholeheartedly. Many are enthusiastic about the name Couples for Christ, and others marvel at its incredible growth. However, Couples for Christ is not merely a name or an organization seeking human glory. It is about God—the God who calls, the God who deserves to be worshiped!
The call extends not only to Frank and Gerry but also to many others, regardless of age, marital status, or circumstances. It is a call to follow His Son and be His disciples in a special way, living in communion with Him as His children in the image of The Son. It is a call to be unique missionaries of holiness, love, and mercy, His devoted servants.
This unique way of discipleship and communion is the charism entrusted to those who are called and chosen. Among those who genuinely worship God in spirit and truth, He selects a few to share in the gift of this charism.
With hearts on fire, just like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, Maria and I heard the call. She said, “Yes!” I said, “Yes!” We said, “Yes!” As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.
Christian families are missionary families, in their everyday life, in their doing everyday things, as they bring to everything the salt and the leaven of faith!
